Slimmers who received personalised weigh-loss guidance via e-mail
shed more pounds than those who didn't get the extra help, according
to an updated paper being presented at the annual meeting of the
North American Association for the Study of Obesity in Long Beach,
California.
Researchers at the Brown University School of Medicine in Providence
released further details in a report they initially discussed last
year. They divided 90 people who were at least 9 kilos overweight
into two groups.
Each group had an initial weight loss counselling session. Each
had access to information on nutrition and weight loss resources.
But the intervention groups got to fill out online diaries of their
food intake and exercise routine and were given expert feedback
by e-mail. They also had access to an online bulletin board and
could share dieting woes with other members.
After three months the trial group had lost an average of 5 kilos;
the other group had lost an average of 1.4 kilos. Weekly feedback
continued through six months.
At six months, the intervention group had lost about 4.5 kilos;
the other group had lost less than 2 kilos. There was no extra e-mail
help between 9 and 12 months, and both groups began to regain weight.
At the end of a year, the trial group had regained about 1.4 kilos;
and maintained a 3 kilo weight loss: the control group had regained
1 kilo, maintaining a 1 kilo loss. Says Deborah Tate, Assistant
professor of psychiatry and human behaviour at Brown. "We're
encouraged by these initial findings and see an opportunity to further
develop weight-loss counselling and programmes via the Web as an
alternative therapy for people who cant, or choose not to
go to a face-to-face weight-loss programme."
